REEL Recovery Film Festival & Symposium New York Edition
Many people see the addiction epidemic and feel helpless to get involved to work towards better outcomes for individuals and families affected by addiction, but don’t know how. REEL Recovery Film Festival & Symposium is an opportunity that will allow an individual or organization to make a significant contribution to educating the public about the reality of substance use disorders including alcohol, opiates and other drugs.
Addiction is one of the United States most devastating illnesses. According to a Columbia University study, “40 million Americans age 12 and over meet the clinical criteria for addiction involving nicotine, alcohol or other drugs.” In addition, public health officials have called the current opioid epidemic the worst drug crisis in American history. It took the lives of more than 33,000 people in 2015. In addition, one in seven people in the United States are expected to develop a substance use disorder at some point.
This year, the REEL Recovery Team is looking for an individual or organization to co-produce the event. The location of the event can be changed if our partner prefers a different venue. Last year, we gave away 5,000 free tickets and have never denied entry to anyone for lack of funds. After each film, we have the filmmaker do a Q&A, or a clinician do a mini-interactive process group with audience members. We never just show a film and send the audience home. We always engage them and welcome their comments, reviews, feelings, and observations. These discussions often offer information on addiction as experienced by communities, and families.
This seven-day event also includes live events. We regularly present Pat Dixon’s Comedy Intervention with six local sober comics providing laughs and entertainment. We have presented other highly notable speakers during our Chasing the Muse … Stone Cold Sober panel event, with guests such as William Cope Moyers; David Carr; Robert Downey, Sr.; Susan Cheever; Malachy McCourt; Joey Pantoliano; Jake Robards; Lawrence Block; and a special day with William G. Borchert, author of My Name is Bill W. and The Lois Wilson Story.
Most importantly, the REEL Recovery Film Festival & Symposium is highly entertaining, inspirational and educational. It also allows an important opportunity to voice one’s views on addiction policy and practice. We are interested in finding a co-producer to ensure that the Film Festival thrives in New York City as a tool to educate the public and brainstorm solutions to this epidemic.
